Lessons from sport in business Okay.

00:14

You gave up on sport, but sport never gave up on you.

00:17

What lessons do you apply to your work? All the ones I could learn from.

00:24

I try to do it consistently, day after day.It is said that we officially stop dreaming when we turn 27.

00:32

And my story is completely the opposite.I was born in Barcelona in 1982, and when I was ten, I had the opportunity to see Barcelona 92 live and happening at that moment with the Olympic Games that transformed the city, which was the embryo of the Barcelona we know today.

00:50

It had such an impact on me at the age of ten to experience those Olympics I said to myself, "Look, I want to be an Olympic athlete." and I really tried with all my might for more than 14 years, until I was 24. I had the chance and the good fortune of being a professional athlete.

01:08

My story is that I tried with all my might.I didn't make it, and that's that.

01:14

I had to make the decision myself.OK, I am 24 years old, I am not going to be an Olympic athlete and it's time to let it go.

01:24

When that happens, you feel completely empty.Unfortunately, we have seen this happen.

01:30

How many elite athletes end up depressed? And in my case, although the beginning was super complicated,I realized something that changed my outlook on life.

01:43

Which is, that the purpose of life is to continue having dreams, and to follow them,to continue having motivation to get up in the morning, and to give your best.

01:52

How many more dreams can there be in life?and they are infinite.

01:57

Any dream can become motivation. And motivation is that energy we need to give our very best.

02:05

And then you add perseverance, discipline, and visualization.

02:11

That's also something great that sport taught me.If there's one thing that high-level sport has is that it helps you visualize.

02:19

From a very young age, you already have the help of psychologists, etc.to help you visualize what the day of the competition might be like.

02:27

What values must remain in the face of defeat or victory.

02:32

After that difficult period, I realized that there were so many lessons to be learned from sport, that I was lucky, because even though I hadn't achieved my goal in the first 25 years of my life,I had everything I needed to achieve them in the next 25 years of my life.

02:47

And it was by applying those values to the company, encouraging people to give their best in the workplace.

02:58

When we think about companies today, how many leaders are achieving that?

03:04

So that's where I'm focusing my efforts and where I believe I can provide much more added value.

03:11

To be that leader who encourages people to give their best far beyond a result or a promotion or anything that is material.

03:21

We're talking about finding a purpose, after all.And I wanted to give you two examples of situations that could arise, quite different from each other, such as pursuing a PhD and starting a business.

03:32

What do they have in common? Both have something in common, which is that first of all, you are faced with a blank sheet of paper.

03:40

In my case,I did a PhD as a test of my abilities, not as an end in itself.to later become a university professor.

03:47

Quite the opposite, in fact. I wanted to know where my limits were.

03:50

When you start a business, what you are looking for is find yourself.

03:55

You have so many internal worries that you need to express them.

04:00

It's the same as a PhD.You start from scratch on a blank sheet of paper and end up in exactly the same way,or that you're adding value to society or you won't succeed.

04:14

You have a hypothesis that you need to confirm. And with that hypothesis that you reaffirm, you solve a problem.

04:22

From that blank sheet of paper with two ideas to resolve that issue at the doctoral level or at the societal level what you have is a path.

04:37

And it's a path that you obviously can't take alone, but it is necessary to walk it in order to figure it out.all those doubts, even concerns that you have inside you.
